Byron Bay is a coastal town in New South Wales and is adored by many, many, many people. The free-spirited charm of this idyllic town is what keeps many people coming back to Byron Bay. Why not experience the magic for yourself and visit Byron Bay on your campervan road trip!
Having the freedom to stop and explore wherever you want is one of the most fun parts of hiring a camper. There’s nothing better than pulling up in your camper, getting your swimsuits on and heading out to the beach. Byron Bay leaves you spoilt for choice with beautiful beaches but we suggest checking out Belongil Beach, Main Beach and Tallows Beach. Fun fact: From June to September you could spot large Humpback whale whilst at the beach!
Belongil Beach signifies the beginning of Main Beach and being home to the Wollongbar Wreck means is a great spot for snorkelling. Belongil Beach has some free parking spaces available which is always handy!
If you’re into stunning views check out Cape Byron, the most easterly point of Australia mainland and projects onto the pacific ocean. You can experience spectacular coastal views along the 3.7km loop track, specifically designed to take you on a hike through the rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops all the way to the Cape Byron lighthouse. It’s possible to park at Cape Byron lighthouse although it can be busy at weekends.
Byron Bay has a wonderful live music culture with gigs and open mic nights running every weekend. It’s a culturally vibrant town, so alongside live music there are always art exhibitions, festivals and markets running. If you’re looking to explore a national park, Arakwal National Park is a short 2 km drive south of Cape Byron (3.2km from the town centre). Arakwal National Park is great for birdwatching, whale watching, swimming, fishing and picnicking. The park is an important part of the Australian ecosystem too, protecting an area of Wallum country which provides habitat to numerous bird species and two native frog species that are deemed vulnerable to extinction, the Wallum Froglet and Wallum Sedge Frog.
Traditionally, Arakwal National Park was the land of the Arakwal people, but in 2001 Arakwal Indigenous community and the New South Wales reached a land use agreement. The Arakwal people are co-managers of the park.
If you fancy dining alfresco, there is a free to use BBQ in Apex Park, just by Main Beach. In lots of parts of Australia you will find public BBQ’s by the beach and park. All you need to do is buy some food from the grocery store, rock up to your chosen BBQ and press the ON button! The perfect way to enjoy dinner Alfresco in your camper.
Byron Bay has a subtropical climate with hot, wet summers and mild, dry winters, making it the perfect place to holiday year round. Sunny days and warm temperatures are common for most of the year, with average temperatures reaching 27°C during summer (December to February). The winter months (June to August) aren’t too chilly either, with daily highs reaching 19 – 20°C although the evenings do get colder and the temperature drops to around 12 – 13°C. There is around 10 days rainfall per month during the summer months.
