It’s one of Australia’s oldest cities and dynamic hub for food, wine, nature and culture. It’s a great place to stopover when travelling around Tasmania so it’s worth factoring in a day or two here whilst on your campervan trip, especially if you’d like to visit the Tamar Valley.
If you’re a thrill seeker and love heights then walking The Alexandra Suspension Bridge is for you. The bridge is over 100 years old and located in the centre of the Cataract Gorge & First Basin Reserve, and offers excellent views of rapids below. There is lots to keep you entertained at the Cataract Gorge Reserve – walking and hiking trails, a swimming pool, beautiful gardens and the world’s longest single span chairlift. If you’re lucky you might spot a wild peacock! The reserve is a short 10 min drive from the CBD and parking available at the reserve.
The Launceston and greater Tamar Valley region have a reputation for incredible wine. Taking a day trip with Platinum Wine Tours is a great way to get a real taste of the local wines and the local area too. Being driven around by experienced tour guides, you can spend the day soaking up the culture, learning about the local area and plus, you get to take a day off driving, what more could you want!
Launceston has a cool, temperate climate, with four distinct seasons. The average maximum daily summer temperature reaches 17 – 23°C (December to February) and winter daily temperatures sit between 3 – 11°C (June to August). Surrounded by many large hills and mountains, Launceston’s weather patterns can change considerably in a short period and you should always be prepared when travelling, especially if you are bushwalking.
Drive 20 mins west of the city and you will find yourself at Tasmania Zoo. Located on 900 acres of old growth native bushland, the zoo home to the state’s largest collection of native and exotic animals, including 40 life-size dinosaurs! It’s a small zoo with well cared for animals that you can really get up close and personal with. The animal encounters are highly recommended. There is BBQ areas available onsite for you to bring your own lunch along as well as the meerkat cafe, where you can watch the meerkats go about their cheeky business while you enjoy your meal. Parking is available onsite.
